(3) Marijuana’s Effect on Dosage Requirements During Sedation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Abstract: Marijuana use is prevalent in the United States and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon likely will perform sedation on patients that use marijuana on a regular basis. The purpose of this study is to determine if there are any changes in anesthetic dose requirements in patients that use marijuana vs. patients that do not. This study is a retrospective cohort study. The study sample included patients from Oct 1, 2022 Dec 31, 2022 who underwent sedation at Kings County Hospital OMFS clinic. 59 total patients were included in the study. 12 patients had a history of marijuana use and 47 did not. A MANCOVA analysis was used for statistical analysis. For Versed, the mean dose used was 3.40 mg for the "No" Marijuana group, and 4.42 mg for the "Yes" marijuana group. For Fentanyl, the mean dose was 61.70 mcg for the No group, and 60.42 mcg for the Yes group. For Propofol, the mean dose was 49.68 mg for the No group, and 69.17 mg for the Yes group. Although, the doses of versed and propofol were higher for patients with a history of marijuana, after controlling for weight and length of procedure, the P-value is 0.160 which is non-significant. This suggests that having a history of Marijuana use has no effect on the dosage requirement of the anesthetic agents used for these patients.
