John M. Le, DDS, MD. Chief resident in the Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospitals in Birmingham, Alabama. John was born and raised in Long Beach, California where he completed his Bachelors in Public Health at the University of California, Irvine. He then went complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During dental school, he developed an interest in research where he joined a basic science lab that studied epigenetics and epithelial wound healing. Eventually, he took an academic year away from dental school to complete the prestigious Medical Research Scholars Program at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. At the NIH was where he was able to perform cutting edge bench top research on bone regeneration and stem cell biology in the animal model. Upon completion his dental training, he then matched at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for oral and maxillofacial surgery where he is currently planning to pursue head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery following the completion of residency. His clinical interest include head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery. His basic science interests include bone biology and regeneration in the animal model. His research focuses include enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols following head and neck surgery, survival outcomes based research for head and neck cancer patients, soft and hard tissue regeneration/ wound healing, tissue engineering, and mesenchymal stem cells. He looks forward to being a part of an academic head and neck practice with responsibilities including patient care, resident teaching, and clinical research following fellowship training in oncology and reconstructive surgery.
