The goals of orthognathic surgery are to improve occlusion, airway and facial esthetics. The use of virtual surgical planning, custom cutting guides and patient-specific plates has greatly improved surgical time and accuracy. However, many risks are associated with this new technology. Every step on a virtual surgical plan has pitfalls embedded on them and may go without notice for the novice in the digital workflow. Surgical expertise – combined with a good level of digital literacy – is still needed to obtain the best outcomes. The purpose of this session is to go over every step of the digital workflow for orthognathic surgery, highlighting the potential risks and pitfalls and how to avoid them, in order to achieve proper outcomes.
