Dr. Antonia Kolokythas, DDS, MSc, MSed, FACS, serves as the Chair and Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University as of January 2023. Joined DCG at AU from the University of Rochester-EIOH at Strong Memorial Hospital where she served as Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department and the Ambulatory Director of OMFS and Hospital Dentistry Services since 2015. Joined the University of Rochester from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, where worked since 2009, as an associate professor, program director, and director of research in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. After earning a dental degree at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, completed residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by two surgical fellowships in Head and Neck-Maxillofacial oncology and Reconstruction at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and the University of California at San Francisco. Immediately after the fellowship training returned to the University of Illinois as full time faculty in the tenure track. Within six years was promoted to the rank of Associate professor with tenure. During the tenure at UIC, earned a U.S. Dental Degree and a Master of Science in Oral Science. Primary research interest is in oral cancer specifically in early detection and diagnosis. Oral cancer and maxillofacial pathology is the primary focus of publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapter contributions, presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Remain active in regional and national professional organizations, and serve on the editorial boards of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the official journal of the OMFS specialty, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases. In 2008 was awarded the Faculty Education Development Award (FEDA) from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Foundation. In 2014 received the Faculty Research Award and the DuBrul Faculty Achievement Award at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, and was named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry in Dental Products Report. The focus of clinical practice is in oral head and neck cancer, maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction. Named Department Chair and Program Director of the University of Rochester-EIOH Advanced Education OMFS Residency Training Program in October of 2015. Was also conducted to the American College of Surgeons in 2015. Obtained a second Master’s degree in Health Professions Education at the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester in 2019. Also completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship program at Drexel University in 2019. Promoted to full Professor with tenure in the University of Rochester’s School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2020. Dr. Kolokythas serves on an Examiner in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) since 2017 and as Content Expert in Reconstruction for ABOMS since 2015. In 2020 was appointed to serve as the Section Editor for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery section for the TripleO.
